Thanks, everyone, for the kind words about my Moxon Vise. I enjoyed making these handwheels, but, man, it was difficult! Someone asked me how I secured the vise to my bench. Most Moxon vises I’ve seen are secured to the bench with clamps. I didn’t like the look of that. Also, I wanted to be able to “install” the Moxon vise in one step. My bench has ¾” round dog holes, so I drilled holes into the underside of the fixed jaw and inserted ¾” oak dowels. I designed it so the dowel on the right side would fit into a dog hole in my tail vise so I could lock the Moxon vise by tightening my tail vise. It turns out that just putting the dowels in the dog holes is secure enough. Someone else pointed out that I didn’t have a stabilizer on the back of the vise. The fixed jaw is 1 ¾” thick and is really rigid. I don’t plan on tightening the vise so hard that it would make the fixed jaw flex. Even if I did, I can’t see the harm in a little flexing. I can always add a stabilizer later if I see a need. Here’s a video showing how I install the Moxon vise on my bench and how the handwheels work. Thanks for looking!

I like how you came up with that solution
it wont make the moxon to flex since you strech the wood and not compressing it
thank for reminding us that a screw can be used both ways :-)
I like your handwheels
one question though when it comes to design
wuoldn´t it have been better to have the wheels and screw as one unit
that screw thrugh the back piece of the vice
so a little thoughts on why you did it this way … is very preciated :-)

Hi Dennis. Thanks for your comment. It would be perfectly fine to have the wheel and screw as one unit. That would work just as well as the way I did it. I think it comes down to personal preference.

Awesome job!! I love the ingenuity of the hand wheels and the idea of using the tail vise to lock it down (even though it turned out you didn’t need it).
Some day I’ll use this for the inspiration to build one for my shop…some day…
What did you use for the screws? All thread?
