Some guys learn engine work while growing up, or fishing, or gain a passion for professional sports teams. I was fortunate to have a dad and grandad very capable with tools. After a 10 year renovation and expansion of our 1898 home, my wife and I are busy raising four kids. Time in the shop is just one of many things that compete for attention. I gained a love of antiques from my mother, and that is exhibited in my tools - SW vintage Stanleys are da bomb! My standing goal is to raise my skill level to the point that I can make quality pieces worthy of passing along to my children.

EDIT: Added 23 May 2012, this portable bench to build.

I think it is a wonderful goal you have set.
You have some lucky kids.
Best thoughts buddy.
