I made some headway yesterday on things, but I still need to remain focused. I realize that this is a time of opportunity for me and I don’t want to let it pass me by. I suppose that puts a bit of pressure on me, but I am rather used to that and in some ways I think I even thrive on it. Sometimes my best work comes from being under the gun. We will just have to hope that this is one of those times.
I spent a good part of the day creating the pattern packet for the birthday calend...

Many moons ago my family and I, including my Mother and my oldest Brother lived with my grandparents and at the ripe old age of extra-young, I remember floating around in the mystical world of my grandfather’s shop. The concrete floors of a repurposed storage/garage was like a mystical land, covered in piles of sawdust and hulks of machinery and both my older brother and I learned a few tricks of the trade at my grandfather’s side. Years later, I shudder somewhat in horror of t...

Old school dulcimer frets. Holes drilled, 12 gauge copper wire hammered into a staple, then pounded into place.
I got excited near the end and just rushed putting everything together. The copper nut I had planned was way too high so I improvised with a piece of scrap ply, will go back and redo that later. The tail isn’t finished or glued. The strings aren’t cut. I used zither pins instead of machine heads (I had a bunch and thought, why not?). Here is a pic, semi-finished, ...

So for whatever reason, I decided that I wanted to learn how to make hand cut dovetails. I don’t really have an implementation for it on a project yet. I just wanted to start trying something new, and begin acquiring skills that I haven’t tried before. These are all cut tails first. So far I’ve got 4 sets made, and you can clearly see the improvements…
First off, I tried on a scrap piece of random pine that I had. Needless to say, they’re not very good...

I was a little uncertain on how to go about stripping the layers of paint from this jointer. I think it had 4 coats of paint in some places. I ended up starting with a “friendly” paint stripper. Citristrip is the name of it. I was actually very surprised at how well this stuff works. It works best when it can sit over night with a plastic bag covering the piece.
I started with the porkchop guard and the switch cover.
I put it on and let it sit for a while and figured th...

I have hesitated to post this blog because the variables involved are hard to describe and I didn’t take very good pics. Regardless, here goes.
Moral of the story – If all else fails, follow the instructions.
To install the rails for the plate &nut assembly you route out a 1/4” rabbet so that they are 3 3/4” from the upper surface. My top thickness is 4 1/16” – so close enough. The routing went fine but the plate would not clear at the far end.

As I indicated in the previous blog, I wanted to save a few bucks and took my “disposable” Ryobi knives to work and asked the tool room manager to try sharpening them. Instead of trying to match the angle of the knife, he just removed .010” off the back. And the results are impressive. They went from completely dull to razor sharp:
Those are some pine shaving left over from surfacing some panels. I’m not sure how many more times they can be sharpened, but fo...

So, a fellow carpenter just told me about danish oil so naturally, i picked some up. I just put it on a cherry and ash box which I will be finishing soon and WOW! I was blown away by the enhancement of the oil. I have mainly been using linseed oil, shellac and polyurethane lately but I really think danish oil is going to open pandora’s box of finishes. Again, I’ll say WOW! God bless.
