Ian Kirby's "The Way to Woodwork" 3 DVD set is a big disappointment

Ian Kirby's "The Way to Woodwork" 3 DVD set is a big disappointment

2 hours ago by dckchk | 2 comments »

I purchased the three DVD set “The Way to Woodwork” for use as a partial “instruction manual” for my grandsons to use with a full workshop that I have recently provided them. After reviewing all three videos in this set I must say I am very disappointed. I found the universal “critical path” description to be a sensible way to describe a basic woodworking methodology. However, as it is laid out in these DVD’s, it is not successfully developed. Fur...

The Chisel Doctor (Honing Guide)

The Chisel Doctor (Honing Guide)

1 day ago by Roger | 8 comments »

While going nuts for a long long time over sharpening chisels, & plane irons, I came across this USA made honing guide from Garrett Wade http://www.garrettwade.com/the-chisel-doctor/p/58A01.01/ It’s a little expensive, but, I don’t think too badly at 45 bux. It is very well made with dual wheels instead of the type that has a single wheel in the middle, 2 brass knurled knobs very nicely counter sunk, and a very nice coating of wrinkle paint. The Chisel Doctor is well worth ...

Woodworking Magazine Survey

Woodworking Magazine Survey

2 days ago by duosonicdave | 39 comments »

Okay LJ’s – time to weigh in. . . I’ve searched around and can’t seem to find a survey/side-by-side comparison of the various woodworking magazines. I’m thinking about taking out my first subscription and find myself wondering, “So, what’s unique about “this” publication vs. “that” publication. I was wondering if those of you who have experience across a wide spectrum of woodworking magazines could describe how they stack ...

second coat bliss

second coat bliss

(sorry for the sideways pic) so my wife and i have an agreement in the kitchen – when i cook, she cleans, and when she cooks she cleans… same goes for painting and finishing; as a result i have been encouraged to switch to water based products for easier (for her) cleanup. hey, it’s a sweet deal, so i’ll give it a shot. for my daughter’s nightstand, she insisted on black (yuck); i didn’t want to paint it, i wanted an opaque or near-opaque stain ...

great for ad-hoc jigs

great for ad-hoc jigs

4 days ago by JC | 7 comments »

pics show just one example of using this product. I made this ad-hoc tapering jig for a project today in about 4 minutes, the rockler hold downs are great! as you can see i used one rockler and one cheap chinese knockoff hold down – big difference! the cheapo flexes and has a plastic insert that’s always getting sideways i will break this jig down now that i’m done cutting tapers for today (see pic below) and put the track and hold downs back into the clear plastic tube t...

More Wisdom From The Past

This book review is from the February 2012 issue of our LumberJocks’ eMag Toolemera (Gary Roberts) is donating another book for a free draw! (See below for details)Woodwork Tools and how to use them This book, another one by William Fairham, is, in my opinion, another great book for woodworkers interested in learning all about hand tools, although there is some information about power tools in the book. Information includes the parts of the tools, how to use the tool, when to use the...

Rockler Workbench Caster Set

Rockler Workbench Caster Set

7 days ago by redryder | 14 comments »

I built this workbench about two years ago. It has three sheets of 3/4” MDF on top and four full extension drawers full of this and that. The workbench probably weights close to 250 pounds. I gave up long ago trying to move it. I saw this caster set advertised in the latest Rockler circular and thought I would give it a try. Everything was super easy to install with all screws, nuts and lock washers provided. This allows you to maneuver your heavy work bench with ease. This s...
