I was born in Baghdad, Iraq 1947 and was interested in woodwork from my childhood when my mother bought me the first hand scrole saw.
It was my favourite toy unlikely for children in their 8 years of age. In my high school years I was good and interested in math, geometry and inparticular in algebra. But the wind was against the ship in which I was traveling and I could not go further than finishing high school in 1964, when I started to work to suport myself.
From Baghdad to Kuwait and Germany and then Australia in 1974 which I proudly call home, I worked hard in many not related to woodwork jobes. But, all that time and everywhere I was, my interest in wood had never faded. I was waiting for the first opportunety to start doing something out of timber, anything.
I took up woodturning and without any kind of training ,alone, I began turning until I joined The Sydney Woodturners about 15 years ago.
I am a very active member of our region. Macarthur, and known as the one who turned the sooccer ball.
The more I turn wood the more I love this hobby, but in the same time I lose interest in any project I repeat for third or even the second time, unless with a better idea or some changes.
I, also, enjoy complicating the project I attemt to work on because I find biger challenge and I like challenges.
I had few public appearances in local newspapers and an article in Australian Woodworkers magazine about how to turn a soccer ball, and another one in the same issue under' Sam Shakouris Adventurs in Segmented Turning.
Well fellows woodturners, you will recognize my character when you visit www.sydneywoodturners.com.au and go to my page after clicking on Gallery Of Members Works. You will see more than 50 photos of my work alone, and those are only FEW of what I have at home.
Keep turning safely.
Sam

Welcome to Lumber Jocks! This is a great place to get – or give – advice about woodworking on the forums and the project posts are a wonderful source of new ideas. I look forward to seeing your projects and posts.

To get the most feedback on your projects, it’s best only post 1 or 2 at a time. This way you will get feedback over several days and from a wide variety of members.

Please enjoy your membership.

Hello, Sam,
Many thanks for your complementary remarks on my latest effort with the Dreidels. Unfortunately, I will be unable to show them to you, or, display them at our next “Show & Tell” meeting, as I have already presented them as a Gift to a Friend. Both Val & I were very favourably impressed with your latest Creation of the Plywood Vase. I will have to `get-my-finger-out` and endeavour to finish the `Wave Form Vase`, that I started, when the weather cools down, `one day`, hopefully!!
I should also mention that Val & I truly value Yours & Asha`s Friendship.
Svaabeck.

Hi Sam,
A belated welcome to LJs. It’s always nice to have another turner on board. Your beautiful work highlights a level of patience I have yet to achieve.
